Dear Friends:

Good things are happening in government - state government, that is.

  • In Louisiana, Gov. Bobby Jindal signed legislation requiring "the fetal heartbeat be made audible to, and ultrasound images be displayed for review by, a pregnant woman at least 24 hours prior to an abortion."
  • In Michigan, the state legislature has approved what some pro-life leaders are calling "the largest collection of pro-life legislation ever addressed at one time" in the Wolverine State.
  • In New York, a bipartisan coalition came together to "again make viewing all child porn online illegal under state law."

Conservatives should not be surprised that the federal system established by our Founders - one where states have great constitutional latitude to order their own affairs - actually works. The closer government is to the people, the greater its accountability to them.

"The powers delegated by (the) Constitution to the federal government are few and defined," wrote James Madison in Federalist 45. "Those which are to remain in the State governments are numerous and indefinite."

Those advancing faith, family, and freedom in the states are proving the validity of Mr. Madison's argument every day. Let's take heart from them.

P.S. Earlier this week, FRC Action President Tony Perkins was joined by national leaders in the fight against "new federal regulations that would force health-care plans to cover abortion drugs, contraceptives and sterilizations." Be sure to watch it here.
