Protecting the State of the Unborn

by Krystle Gabele

January 30, 2014

H.R. 7 was passed in the House of Representatives on Tuesday night, as six Democrats and a 39 vote victory ensured that taxpayers will not be funding abortions.  While the House passed the measure, we would ask the Senate to take up the conversation and debate.

Below are remarks by Members of Congress in support of H.R. 7.

Dear Friends,

On Tuesday evening, U.S. Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-WA) gave a moving address about the hope and opportunity all Americans share. Responding to the President’s State of the Union message, she spoke of the grandeur of “a nation where a girl who worked at the McDonald’s Drive-Thru to help pay for college can be with you from the United States Capitol.”

She also talked about her wonderful son Cole, a little boy with Down Syndrome. She described him as “a 6-year old boy who dances to Bruce Springsteen; who reads above grade level; and who is the best big brother in the world. We see all the things he can do, not those he can’t. Cole, and his sisters, Grace and Brynn, have only made me more determined to see the potential in every human life — that whether we are born with an extra 21st chromosome or without a dollar to our name — we are not defined by our limits, but by our potential.”

Last summer, Rep. McMorris Rodgers’ former staffer, now-U.S. Rep. Jaime Beutler Herrera (R-WA), gave birth to a little girl with Potter’s Syndrome, “a kidney and lung condition that’s typically fatal.” Both of these brave women have shown that every child is a precious gift. One week after the March for Life, let’s keep remembering that.

Sincerely,
Rob Schwarzwalder

P.S. FRC’s Executive Vice-President, Lt. Gen. (ret) Jerry Boykin, earlier this week submitted eloquent testimony to the House Armed Service’s Military Personnel subcommittee regarding “Religious Accommodations in the Armed Services.” Read the full text of his timely comments here.

ProLifeCon 2014 Features The Duggar Family

by Krystle Gabele

January 21, 2014

We are only a day away from ProLifeCon, the premier gathering of online pro-life activists.  We have many exciting and informative speakers, and there is no doubt that you will learn how you can encourage and motivate pro-life activists in your community.

This year, we are honored to welcome The Duggar Family to ProLifeCon.  Michelle and Jim Bob Duggar of the popular TLC show 19 Kids & Counting are celebrating 30 years of marriage this year. With 19 children, including 10 boys and 9 girls, plus 3 grandkids, life is very busy.

The Duggars started filming their first show back 10 years ago when they only had 14 children. Over the years the name of their show has changed as their family size has increased. The first show was called 14 Children and Pregnant Again, then the show name changed to 16 Children and Moving In, 17 Kids & Counting, 18 Kids & Counting, and finally to 19 Kids and Counting. Two hundred shows later they are still weekly filming their daily life and adventures of their growing family. Their shows air around the world in many foreign countries and the Duggars have been guest on numerous National and International TV shows.

The Duggar’s heart is to share with the world that children are a blessing from God. They believe the Bible is the owner’s manual for our lives. They have written two New York Times Best-selling books, 20 & Counting and A Love that Multiplies. Jim Bob Duggar was an Arkansas State Representative from 1999-2002. The four oldest Duggar daughters Jana, Jill, Jessa & Jinger are releasing their new book Growing Up Duggar on March 4, 2014. Season 8 of 19 Kids & Counting premieres on TLC, March 11, 2014.

January 20, 2014

This year’s ProLifeCon promises to be another exciting time to unite pro-life activists from across the country to become active online and bring awareness to the sanctity of life.  We have an exciting line-up of speakers, who will not only educate you on emerging technologies to help spread the message, but make you aware of the issues impacting the pro-life community in 2014.

We are grateful to have Ryan Bomberger, Chief Creative Officer of The Radiance Foundation as a speaker at this year’s ProLifeCon.  Ryan will no doubt inspire you with his story, as well as with his vast knowledge on utilizing the internet to educate the community on adoption.

Ryan’s story is also inspiring.  His biological mother was raped, but chose to continue her pregnancy and gave him life.  He was adopted as a baby and grew up in a loving Christian family.  Ryan has won an Emmy Award for his work.  He founded The Radiance Foundation, along with his wife, Bethany, and has been active with the pro-life community with the TooManyAborted.com billboard/web campaigns, which advocates for adoption within the black community.

Pro-Life Speeches from the House of Representatives

by Krystle Gabele

January 16, 2014

Last night, the House of Representatives held special order speeches to commemorate the 41st Anniversary of Roe v. Wade, which legalized abortion in the United States. Below are the speeches from the floor of the House:

Next week, America commemorates a grim anniversary: It was on January 22, 1973 that the Supreme Court opened the doors to legalized elective abortion-on-demand with its decision in Roe v. Wade.

The historic teaching of the Christian faith is that personhood begins at the moment of conception. Consider some quotes from a widely diverse group of theologians:

Clement of Alexandria, church father (circa 150 - 215 AD): “Abortion is killing human life that is under God’s care, design and providence.”

John Calvin, Protestant Reformer: “…the unborn, though enclosed in the womb of his mother, is already a human being, and it is an almost monstrous crime to rob it of life which it has not yet begun to enjoy.”

Orthodox Church in America: “Because we believe that each of us is willed to be, by God, we cannot accept the belief that the humanity which starts at conception is accidental, or has no value … Every life is valued infinitely by God. This includes the life of the unborn child.”

And last but certainly not least, the media’s favorite “liberal,” Pope Francis:

Among the vulnerable for whom the Church wishes to care with particular love and concern are unborn children, the most defenseless and innocent among us. Nowadays efforts are made to deny them their human dignity and to do with them whatever one pleases … the Church cannot be expected to change her position on this question.

Protecting the unborn and their vulnerable mothers has always been, and always will be, essential to Christian faith. The Apostle Peter, in one of the earliest sermons ever given, called Jesus “the Prince of Life” (Acts 3:15). Let’s keep working to honor that glorious title as we celebrate and defend the precious lives He creates.

Sincerely,

Rob Schwarzwalder
Senior Vice President
Family Research Council

Dear Friend,

It’s common this time of year to ask, “Are you ready for Christmas?”

Usually what’s meant by this is, have you purchased all the presents you wish to give? Are your travel plans all set? Will you be taking time off between Christmas and New Year?

Shorthand expressions save time and unneeded explanation, but sometimes they misstate the very question they ask.

In a recent talk at FRC, Dr. Kenyn Cureton got to the real meaning of how to be ready for Christmas and invited us to consider how to truly prepare for “the Word (Who) became flesh.” Dr. Cureton, who leads FRC’s Church Ministries department, invested 20 years as a pastor after earning his Ph.D. in theology. His message is informed by a scholar’s eye and a pastor’s heart, and most supremely by love for Jesus Christ. You can listen here.

Get ready - and Merry Christmas!

P.S. Adult stem cell treatments save lives, and FRC’s Dr. David Prentice offers proof in his fascinating recent talk here at FRC.

Dear Friends,

Adult stem cells are living evidence that we are “fearfully and wonderfully made” (Psalm 139). FRC’s prestigious Dr. David Prentice, who leads our adult stem initiative, has just released a moving new video, “Adult Stem Cell Success Story - Terry Killman.”

Terry was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia almost three years ago. Even though Terry’s cancer was diagnosed early, it escalated dramatically.  At one point, his oncologist told him he had to start treatment immediately or be dead within days.

An adult stem cell transplant from Terry’s brother, Vic, saved his life. Terry’s wife, Michelle, says “And to know now what they’re doing with adult stem cells is absolutely amazing.” Now the former Navy engine man is back to college studying to be a teacher, and fishing with his grandson. As Terry says, “If it wasn’t for the love of my family, I wouldn’t be here. We’re very tight. You trust in God to carry you through, because between family and faith, you’ve got to have both to survive.”

We can save lives through ethical adult stem cell research and treatment. Join FRC in this vital effort by going to StemCellResearchFacts.org.

Sincerely,

Rob Schwarzwalder
Senior Vice President
Family Research Council

P.S. Watch Tennessee Congressman Phil Roe describe a conservative alternative to Obamacare, which he shared at FRC this week.
