What Every Parent Should Know About Girl Scouts “World Thinking Day”

by Cathy Ruse

February 22, 2013

Today the Girl Scouts of America celebrate “World Thinking Day.”

On “World Thinking Day,” they earn badges for thinking about hunger or talking to a Peace Corps volunteer. They also “give thanks for” their membership in the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS), the creator of World Thinking Day. And to really show their thanks, they collect money to send it to WAGGGS. Parents, hold on to your pocketbooks!

A noted player on the international stage, WAGGGS is an ardent advocate for controversial social policies including abortion and sex rights for children. Girl Scouts USA is its single largest organizational funder. In fact, every American girl who joins a Girl Scout troop at her neighborhood church is made a de facto member of this radical group.

If you have not read about the plans, programs, and priorities of WAGGGS, you must do so today. I promise, it will give you something to think about.

Feathers Ruffled at Greater DC Girl Scout Council

by Cathy Ruse

January 27, 2012

The Girl Scout Council of the Nationals Capitol is handing out a statement to people who are inquiring about the charges I and others have made about the far-Left agenda at Girl Scouts HQ. Lets take a look:

Regarding the charge that the Girl Scouts official policy is to admit transgender toddlers, the statement reads: Our Council has not dealt with requests from families of transgender youth. Our focus remains on girls in kindergarten through… It does not say they will not admit transgender boys and in fact it is the national policy that they do so if ever there is a request.

More from their statement: And, contrary to rumors, we do not make donations to this group [Planned Parenthood]. The fact is that as a charitable organization we do not make donations to any other organization. We see your Straw Man, ladies! Nobody is claiming that you donate money to Planned Parenthood, so disclaiming it gets you nowhere. The charge is that you partner with… Planned Parenthood organizations across the country, in the words of Girl Scout CEO Kathy Cloninger on The Today Show.

More: Girl Scouts of the USA is one of the 145 Member Organizations of WAGGGS, which promotes mutual understanding and cross-cultural opportunities for girls around the world. Ah yes, they are touchy about the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts, an aggressively pro-abortion organization which openly partners with the International Planned Parenthood Federation. Girl Scouts USA often makes the point that they are just one of many member organizations; they dont like to admit that Girl Scouts USA is the single largest national component of WAGGGS, making up over a third of its 10 million members.

More: “the WAGGGS program is separate from our Girl Scout program, and your Girl Scout membership dues and cookie sales proceeds do not support WAGGGS. Not so fast. Every little girl who signs up for the Girl Scouts is automatically made a member of WAGGGS, and there are apparently 6 different ways that Girls Scouts USA fund the radical WAGGGS. If Girl Scouts of the Nations Capitol refrains from every one of these 6 funding streams, they should prove it. Girl Scouts USA paid about 1.5 million dollars in member quota dues to WAGGGS in 2009.

Finally, a small change was in order to my blog on the Girl Scouts from yesterday. In the 4th FACT about Girl Scouts and abortion, I clarified that Girl Scout “councils” are regional and multi-county entities, since people tend to confuse troops with councils.

Girl Scouts Not Pro-Abortion! Earth Not Round!

by Cathy Ruse

January 25, 2012

I recently opined in the Washington Times that people should forgo the Thin Mints this year because of the far-left sociopolitical agenda pushed by Girl Scouts HQ. Others, too, have sounded the alarm. Feathers have been ruffled.

While their transgressions are sundry (forcing troops to admit cross-dressing boys being just one example), Girl Scout executives and their apologists seem most eager to defend the Scouts supposed official neutrality on abortion and official non-partnership with the nations abortion giant, Planned Parenthood.

Here are just five facts for the skeptic to consider:

FACT: On March 5, 2004 Girl Scouts CEO Kathy Cloninger admits on NBCs The Today Show: We partner with many organizations. We have relationships with…Planned Parenthood organizations across the country. Watch her admit it here:

FACT: In January 2012, Girl Scouts employee Renise Rodriguez wears Pray to End Abortion t-shirt during off-duty visit to her Tucson Girl Scout office and is ordered to turn the shirt inside out or leave. See Renise in her t-shirt here.

FACT: For fourteen years the Girls Scouts in Waco, TX co-sponsor sex ed conference with Planned Parenthood. Its Perfectly Normal book (written by Planned Parenthood executive) given to all children in attendance says abortion can be a positive experience. View the 2003 event brochure listing Girl Scouts as a cosponsor here [PDF].

FACT: In national survey, sixteen other regional, multi-county Girl Scout councils admit to partnering with Planned Parenthood; many other councils refuse to answer survey question. Watch interview about the survey on The OReilly Factor here.

FACT: In 2010-2011 Girls Scouts in New York partner with Planned Parenthood sex ed program, Real Life. Real Talk. The program website touts their partners: Real Life. Real Talk. is proud to count the following organizations, faith communities and companies as partners: …Girl Scouts of NYPENN Pathways. See screenshot of program web page showing Girls Scouts as partner here.

There are many other things to consider, especially for those for whom this is not an academic exercise (i.e., if you have a daughter in Girl Scouts). Please, please visit www.100questionsforthegirlscouts.org or any other of the Girl Scout watchdog sites proliferating on the Internet.

Young Female Leaders Speaking Out About Girl Scouts of America and Planned Parenthood

by Family Research Council

May 6, 2011

FRC previously has reported on the allied relationship between Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA) and the Girl Scouts of America (GSA) as well as their international branch, World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAAGGS). Because of the increasingly close connections between these groups, pro-life young women who desire to grow and do good through involvement in the GSA have found themselves in increasingly difficult, and even compromising, positions.

Onto that backdrop, two teenagers and former girl scouts, Tess and Sydney Volanski, using some of the very skills acquired in scouting formation (Discover, Connect and take Action), have come forward in an effort, what they describe as a moral imperative, to educate their friends and girls around the country about the relationship between PPFA and GSA; to speak the truth about the girl scouts via a new blog.

I would highly recommend the blog —- it is very informative, and includes the Volanskis personal story about leaving their scout troop after eight years of involvement, as well as other information about GSA and abortion, such as a look at major GSA role models (many who are active abortion advocates). It also includes interesting quotes from Abby Johnson, a former PP clinic director who is now a pro-life activist. In the Volanskis words, It was a very difficult experience to discover that we had unknowingly been promoting and supporting a group that stands for the opposite of the beliefs we hold deeply in our hearts. We want to do everything we can to prevent this heartbreak for other girls and their families.

For those girls and families who are looking for a wholesome scouting alternative to GSA, the Volanskis make a few suggestions on their website, including American Heritage Girls.

Concerned Parent and Former Girl Scout Leader Explores GSA Relationship with Planned Parenthood and other Pro-abortion Groups

by Family Research Council

September 23, 2010

Back in March C-FAM broke the news that the Girl Scouts of America (GSA) and their parent organization, World Association of Girl Scouts (WAGGGS), distributed Planned Parenthood sex education brochures — for HIV positive youth — during a meeting for young people at the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women. Soon after, C-FAM documented the well-established relationship between the Girl Scouts and Planned Parenthood.

Mariellen Rechtin is a concerned parent and former Girl Scout leader from Ohio who, deeply troubled by the C-FAM reports, began to conduct her own research into the relationship between Planned Parenthood and the Girl Scouts.

Below are clips from Mariellen Rechtins research on the Girl Scouts, as well as links to the sources:

Since the 1990s the Girl Scouts organization (both GSUSA WAGGGS) has migrated in a more radical, feminist, new age direction. Consider: 1) God being made optional in the Oath; 2) various cases of Planned Parenthood invited to do badge work in councils around the U.S. 3) Radical Feminist, pro-abortion, and lesbian speakers such as Charlotte Bunch, Kavita Ramdas, and Dr. Johnetta Cole receiving awards or speaking at conferences 4) the activist involvement by the World Association of Girl Scouts (WAGGGS) at the United Nations.

Most telling about the Girl Scouts position on the issues of sexual education, contraception distribution to adolescents and abortion are the words posted on the WAGGGS website for the Commission on the Status of Women conference. It states:

We demand access to comprehensive sexuality information, services and supplies for all young people. We need it today and today needed to be yesterday. The young people from more than 20 countries and every continent collectively demand their sexual and reproductive rights:

  • All young people must have access to comprehensive sexuality education and sexual and reproductive health services, including contraception and emergency contraception….
  • Accessible, affordable and safe abortion should be made part of the minimum package of sexual and reproductive services.

When this page is compared to the same coverage of the same day at the conference on International Planned Parenthood Federations webpage, one will note that the text and photograph are identical.

In some of its badge requirements, WAGGGS clearly is encouraging a permissive sexuality protected by condoms. Consider the AIDS badge which lists as requirements drawing male and female bodies and identifying the body fluids capable of carrying HIV, visiting a Family Planning Clinic, demonstrate putting a condom on a finger or other suitable device, etc. An Adolescent Health Badge was developed by WAGGGS and Family Health International as a two year pilot program for eventual availability around the world.

On the GSA website, there is also the Our Rights, Our Responsibilities Patch . Under Section 1, The Right to be Me, there is a link to the UK Childrens Rights Web site which encourages a Red Ribbon Party for AIDS. One of the suggestions for the party is cake sale, and it even encourages the making of a condom cake (NOTE: the link worked in April, but was removed a few months later).

A reasonable person could conclude that while WAGGGS/GSUSA may not force its position on any individual troop or Girl Scout in the U.S., it has clearly chosen to take a stance on the issues of sex education, contraception and abortion.

WAGGGS as a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) partnered with the UNFPA, which has a mission to make contraception and abortion available to young people world wide in order to prevent HIV/AIDS and unwanted pregnancy, the goal being to improve health and reduce poverty.

More recently, WAGGS endorsed and helped to develop the Guantajuato Statement (NGO Position Statement) that emerged from the World Conference on Youth, in Mexico City in August, 2010. The statement included the following: (entire document can be found here)

We demand governments…guarantee the rights of young people including…the right to health, including sexual and reproductive health and rights

We commit…to continue working to achieve development through…evidence based comprehensive sexuality education to achieve Millenium Development Goals (MDG) 5 and 6 Note: Evidence based comprehensive sexuality education is sex education that understands that there is no such thing as telling a teen not to have sex and then thinking that they are actually going to listen to you.

We commit…to continue working to achieve development through…Guarantee the full realization of the highest level of physical mental and social health for young people…above all the target lagging farthest behind, MDG 5b Universal Access to Reproductive Health by 2015. Note: MDG5b is all about contraception access for all young people, safe abortion and comprehensive sexuality education.

We commit…to continue working to achieve development through…Fully recognize young peoples sexual and reproductive rights, particularly the right to choose, through achieving universal access to confidential, youth-friendly sexual and reproductive health services including access to evidence-based comprehensive sexuality education, in informal and non-formal settings. Implement key effective interventions in the continuum of care for maternal health, including access to a full range of contraceptives and safe abortion. (emphasis mine)

We commit…to continue working to achieve development through…that Governments recognize LGBT (Lesbian/Gay/Bisexual/Transsexual) as part of the spectrum of gender identities and ensure that young people that identify themselves as such have their Human Rights upheld.

Mariellen ultimately came to the conclusion that her family could no longer be involved with the Girl Scouts. Moreover, she now believes that some agendas promoted within the GSA are incompatible with a Christian worldview.

Girl Scouts Deny Sex Guide Was at UN Meeting for Girls: But it Was There

by Cathy Ruse

March 15, 2010

Our friends at CFam, the pro-life watch dogs at the United Nations helmed by my husband Austin, issued a blockbuster last week when they revealed that the Girl Scouts had a meeting for girls only at the UN last week which included a Planned Parenthood guide for sex. It was a no-adults-allowed affair; any adult not associated with the Girl Scouts was kicked out.

The Girl Scouts have been officially pro-choice for years. Now theyre pushing promiscuous sex on the girls. Heres an excerpt from page 11 of the Planned Parenthood guide offered at the secret meeting:

Some people have sex when they have been drinking alcohol or using drugs. This is your choice. Being drunk or high can affect the decisions you might make about sex or safer sex. If you want to have sex and think you might get drunk or high, plan ahead by bringing condoms and lube or putting them close to where you usually have sex.

Apparently Planned Parenthood does advocate some limits to sex: It is not okay to have sex with someone who is so drunk or high that they are staggering, incoherent or have passed out. (What prudes!)

C-Fams report has rocketed around the Girl Scout world. Girl Scout officials have issued denials that the brochure was even present at the meeting while faith-filled Girl Scout leaders are up in arms and threatening to leave. C-Fam stands by its report: the Planned Parenthood sex guide was at the meeting.
